Traveling Angel (forward e-mail) April 13, 2011

Waking up in the morning, and going to work feels like a task sometimes. Deadlines, ASAP, within the day, Rush is a usual word I’ll receive in my e-mail, but having receive an inspiring story is a breath of clean air for me. I hope you find this cute and worth the time.

Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family.

The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion’s guest room.

Instead the angels were given a small space in the cold basement.

As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it.

When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied,

“Things aren’t always what they seem”

The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife.

After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest.

When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears.

Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field.

The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel how could you have let this happen?

The first man had everything, yet you helped him, she accused.

The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let the cow die..

“Things aren’t always what they seem,” the older angel replied.

“When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall.

Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn’t find it.”

“Then last night as we slept in the farmers bed, the angel of death came for his wife I gave him the cow instead.

Things aren’t always what they seem.”

To my fellow Filipino countrymen, how do you celebrate our 25th People Power Revolution Anniversary? I am not against working holiday but I think the bloodless revolt anniversary can be more eminent if it were a non-working holiday. You must be thinking I’m just a lazy employee who loves a vacation. There might be 25% truth in that but People Power is one of the things I am proud of as a Filipino and I think it should be honored by everyone not just those bosses who have the luxury to be in festive sites.

This post maybe in rant mode but the main thing is I am proud of our version of People Power. Not only is it the first in the world, it is a “bloodless” revolt that overthrows a dictator. This is our legacy to the world and commemorating this event shows how we are peace loving and we value freedom that much, millions of people went out on the streets to make a positive change.

Thank you for those born before us that gave us this liberty.

Happy Valentines! (or to some, single awareness day =D)

This is my first Valentine’s Day as a husband and soon to be daddy. Being married made my relationship with Marj very happy and spontaneous. I’ve never imagined anticipation for our baby would be this exciting.
We were engaged for four years (minus the two years that we were separated) before I proposed to she and she said yes of course. More than a year of planning went through and we had some rough times in the preparation but it made it all worth it on our wedding day. Sometimes I think having God’s blessings really makes the difference in our bond as husband and wife. It just feels so happy and smooth sailing although we still have our discussions and differences, we’re as one now.

Thank you honey for being the wife that you are now, Happy Valentines! I love you and our baby in your tummy, John Matthew.

Morning news is most of the time negative news, that’s why we infrequestly neglect or avoid receiving morning news. Timely, this morning is one of those irritating day. Bus bombing, construction accident, top with ranting tyrant director, I could use a reading / self-help like this.

GIVE THANKS

Take 15 minutes every morning regularly for an inventory period. Make a mental list – to write it down is still better – of every good thing in your life. Add them up and you will say, ‘Why this is simply terrific! How greatly God is blessing me.’

Use this affirmation, ‘God is good. God is surrounding me with opportunity. He is filling my life with blessings. He is pouring happiness into me. Praise the Lord. Thank you, Heavenly Father.’

Search the Scriptures for powerful passages of faith; mark them and make them yours. The Scriptures are full of them. When down moments come, fall back on these verses. Say them aloud and clearly.

Another instance where God is precise, with perfect timing, no accident.

OUR HIDING PLACE

Even when walking through the dark
valley of death I will not be afraid,
for you are close beside me,
guarding, guiding all the way.
PSALM 23:4 TLB

In The Hiding Place, Corrie Ten Boom tells of tense times her family experienced in Holland during the German invasion. One night, as Corrie tossed restlessly on her bed while war bombers droned overhead and artillery burst nearby, she heard her sister downstairs in the kitchen.

Unable to sleep, she arose and joined Betsie for a cup of tea. The two talked well into the night, until the sound of the bombers died away. They knew that explosions had ripped an area nearby, but all had become quiet.

As Corrie stumbled through the darkness back to her room, she reached down to pat her pillow before laying down. As she did, something sharp cut her hand. It turned out to be a ten-inch-long piece of jagged metal! She cried out for her sister and raced back down the stairs holding the shrapnel in her hand.

As Betsie bandaged her hand, she said repeatedly, “On your pillow!”

Corrie said, “Betsie, if I hadn’t heard you in the kitchen….” To this her sister firmly said, “Don’t say it, Corrie! There are no ‘ifs’ in God’s world. The center of His will is our safety.”

Corrie later took that message around the world: “God’s will is our hiding place.”

Strategic Management December 10, 2010

It’s fun to receive a joke email in the office.. First it is an icebreaker for the monotonous office job, and Second it’s about the bosses. (makes it funnier. hehe)

Strategic Management
In the Beginning was the Plan
And then came the Assumptions
And the Assumptions were without form
And the Plan was completely without substance
and the darkness was upon the face of the workers
and they spoke among themselves, saying
“It is a crock of shit and it stinketh.”
And the workers went unto their Supervisors and sayeth,
“It is a pail of dung and none may abide the odour thereof”,
And the Supervisors went unto their Managers and sayeth unto them,
“It is a container of excrement and it is very strong,
Such that none may abide by it.”
And the Managers went unto their Directors and sayeth,
“It is a vessel of fertilizer, and none may abide its strength.”
And the Directors spoke amongst themselves, saying one to another,
“It contains that which aids plant growth, and it is very strong.”
And the Directors went unto the Vice Presidents and sayeth unto them,
“It promotes growth and is very powerful.”
And the Vice Presents went unto the President and sayeth unto him,
“This new plan will actively promote the growth and efficiency
of this Organization, and in these areas in particular.”
And the President looked upon The Plan,
And saw that it was good, and the Plan became Policy.
This is How Shit Happens.

Boss myth December 2, 2010

There was this fellow forum member whom posted this funny short joke. It’s not the first time that I read it but the story still makes me smile, I hope you do too.

When the body was created, all parts argued about who should be Boss.
The brain said, “I should be Boss since I control the body’s thoughts, responses and functions.”

The hands said, “We should be Boss since we do all the work and earn all the money.”

The feet said, “We should be Boss since we are the ones that carry the brain around and get him to wherever he wants to go.”

And so it went, on and on, with the heart, the lungs and the eyes until, finally, the asshole spoke up.

The other parts laughed at the prospect of the asshole being the Boss. So the asshole got angry, went on strike and refused to work. Within a short time, the brain fevered, the hands clenched, the feet twitched, the heart and lungs began to panic, and the eyes crossed.

Finally, they all conceded that the asshole would be the Boss and the motion was passed. All the other parts resumed doing their work while the Boss just sat and passed out the shit.

The moral of the story… You don’t need brains to be a Boss… any asshole will do!

More often, an invitation is a happy thought. I love it when people come together, enjoying each other’s company, exchanging a few jokes and catch some laughs. However good or bad a situation is, it is much better to have someone around to comfort and be with us, especially God whom always loved us.

GOD’S FAVORITE WORD

Jesus said, “Come follow me.”
MATTHEW 4:19

God is an inviting God. He invited Mary to birth his Son, the disciples to fish for men, the adulteress woman to start over, and Thomas to touch his wounds. God is the King who prepares the palace, sets the table, and invites his subjects to come in.

In fact, it seems his favorite word is come.

“Come, let us talk about these things. Though your sins are like scarlet, they can be as white as snow.”

“All you who are thirsty, come and drink.”

“Come to me all, all of you who are tired and have heavy loads, and I will give you rest.”…

God is a God who invites. God is a God who calls.

Shouting quietly December 1, 2010

From time to time I like having a simple day, get away from the technicals and further complications. Sometimes I want to just stay in the house, eat “champurado” and “tuyo”, “pindang”, or just “ginisang salmon”. It feels wonderful to live a simple life, I hope we can all do it too. More sophisticated, fancy things doesn’t always mean better.

SEEKING QUIETNESS

Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life,
to mind your own business and to work with your hands,
just as we told you.
1 THESSALONIANS 4:11

Long before the age of jets, the Internet, or television, theologian Arthur Pink wrote the following: “What man despises, God esteems; and what man admires, He abominates. The world is mad, and speed is one of the ‘gods’ which is now worshipped by the multitudes. And living as we yet are in the world, God’s own people are infected with its evil spirit. Much need has each of us to beg the Lord to lay His cooling and calming hand upon the feverish ‘flesh’ in us.”

Do you ever ask yourself what Jesus would do if He were living among us here today? Would He jam more and more into His schedule, or would He walk away from the frenetic activity of life today and find a quiet place for solitude? Would He leave His computer and mobile phone behind to listen to the wind as it blows through the trees or ponder the awesome, sometimes ferocious sound of silence?

Isaiah told us that “in quietness and trust is your strength” but then added, “but you would have none of it” (Isaiah 30:15). Were he alive today, he could say the same thing. Whose fault is it that life is so busy? Obviously, it is our own doing. Therefore the undoing of our busyness is also our obligation and should be one of the first orders of business.

When Paul wrote to the Thessalonians he told them to study to be quiet (1 Thessalonians 4:11 KJV) – something which was commanded. The word “quiet” means to “cease from labor, to hold your peace, to be still.” As God tells us in Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Most of the time we are preoccupied with things that are not important, advancement in technology has made us so busy that we don’t have time to pause and reflect. Even time we should spend with our love ones are shortened. Sometimes I wonder how past civilization is fortunate to live such simple lives.

Times have changed and we need to change with it, but we should also have some time off, take a breather for our love ones and most importantly for the Lord.

THE CURSE OF BUSYNESS

The fruit of the righteousness will be peace;
the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever.
ISAIAH 32:17

Do you ever get the feeling that if you could cross everything off of your “things to do” list, return every phone call, attend every meeting, and get everything done at home, that God would be very pleased with you? Would you, then, expect Him to sit back and say, “Good job!” much like you do when your son brings home a report card with straight A’s on it?

The fact is, we transfer our “hurry up and get things done” mentality to our relationship with God. We think that He is pleased when we attend more meetings, get to more places, and do more things. Strangely enough, when Jesus was in the midst of the busiest time of his life, He withdrew for solitude, prayer, and contemplation. Jesus believed that He could maximize His effectiveness by doing less publicly.

The solitude that we need rarely comes in chunks of undivided days when you can withdraw to a mountain retreat somewhere. It can be found in one-hour snatches when you take the telephone off the hook, refuse to answer the door, and silence the radio and TV. It’s then that you can open your Bible and quietly meditate and listen to the voice of God saying, “This is the way, walk here.”

We have to walk away from the mentality that the more we do, the more God is pleased, and understand that what we are is far more important than what we do.

Isaiah chided the people of his day, saying, “This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: ‘In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength….’” (Isaiah 30:15)

How we should serve November 25, 2010

I always like people with diligence in doing their work, maybe because I find it hard to do that, I’m clamsy and sometimes careless. Let me share one story we can emulate, of a boy giving his best in every job. Our deep faith will always give us what we need to serve our neighbor.

THE SHINY BOOTS

A missionary from India told about an army officer who stopped to have his shoes shined by a poor Indian boy on the street. The lad launched into his task with such enthusiasm and vigor that the man was utterly amazed. Instead of an ordinary, slip-shod performance with all-too-eagerly outstretched hand for a tip, the boy worked diligently until the leather sparkled with a brilliant luster. The officer asked, “Why are you taking so much time to polish my boots?” “Well, sir,” was the reply, “last week Jesus came into my heart and now I belong to Him. Since then, every time I shine someone’s shoes, I keep thinking they’re His, so I do the very best I can. I want Him to be pleased!”

 A PIG…

A pig was complaining to a cow that he was not appreciated.  “I don’t understand it,” he said, “people are always talking about how generous you are, giving them cream and milk and butter for their daily use.  That’s nice, of course, but I give more than you do – ham and bacon and bristles and feet.  Yet nobody has any use for me.  They make fun of me and call me a pig.  I don’t like it.”

“Perhaps the difference,” the cow replied after a moment’s hesitation, “is that I give while I’m still living.”

Today is not a great morning.. my wife and I had an argument and. Everytime we do, I always feel guilty. Guilty that I didn’t exert more patience, that I didn’t take control of my mind and myself. I love my wife very much and eventhough she may not agree with me or follow what I want, I still want to make her happy. So I ask God to always give me a cool head and the ability to be a good communicator. I still have a long way to go, and I am glad that my wife is with me in this journey. And this email that she sent today, eventhough its a chain mail gives me more inspiration to enjoy life and trust in God.

NEED WASHING?

A little girl had been shopping with her Mom in WalMart. She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful red haired, freckle faced image of innocence.

It was pouring outside. The kind of rain that gushes over the top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit the earth it has no time to flow down the spout.. We all stood there, under the awning, just inside the door of the WalMart.

We waited, some patiently, others irritated because nature messed up their hurried day.

I am always mesmerized by rainfall. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world.  Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a child came pouring in as a welcome reprieve from the worries of my day.

Her little voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance we were all caught in, ‘Mom let’s run through the rain,’

She said.

‘What?’ Mom asked.

‘Let’s run through the rain!’ She repeated.

‘No, honey. We’ll wait until it slows down a bit,’ Mom replied.

This young child waited a minute and repeated: ‘Mom, let’s run through the rain..’

‘We’ll get soaked if we do,’ Mom said.

‘No, we won’t, Mom. That’s not what you said this morning,’ the young girl said as she tugged at her Mom’s arm.

‘This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?’

‘Don’t you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, ‘ If God can get us through this, He can get us through anything! ‘ ‘

The entire crowd stopped dead silent.. I swear you couldn’t hear anything but the rain.. We all stood silently. No one left. Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say.

Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child’s life. A time when innocent trust can be nurtured so that it will bloom into faith.

‘Honey, you are absolutely right. Let’s run through the rain. If GOD let’s us get wet, well maybe we just need washing,’ Mom said.

Then off they ran. We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they darted past the cars and yes, through the puddles. They got soaked.

They were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, I did.

I ran.  I got wet.  I needed washing.

Circumstances or people can take away your material possessions, they can take away your money, and they can take away your health. But no one can ever take away your precious memories…So, don’t forget to make time and take the opportunities to make memories everyday.

To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven.

I HOPE YOU STILL TAKE THE TIME TO RUN THROUGH THE RAIN.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them.

Take the time to live!!!

Keep in touch with your friends, you never know when you’ll need each other –

And don’t forget to run in the rain!

I can do all things through Christ Which strengthen me.

I have never been so thrilled by a Manny Pacquiao fight like “Pacquiao – Margarito” fight. As much as I want to believe, I don’t think Manny is in his best shape now. For the least, not like his condition when he faught Dela Hoya or Morales. Plus, Margarito is a taller (and some say dirty) boxer than Manny. The suspense is high on this fight.

I think this will go down the wire, a 12 round decision for Manny. What do you think, What is your fearless forecast?

CHRISTIANITY IN ACTION

        H. H. Lee said that at one end of the truck terminal where he worked, was a coal company with a high fence around it.  Nearby was a railroad, and each day several freight trains passed by.  Lee often noticed that the owner of the yard, who was a Christian, threw chunks of coal over the fence at various places along the track.  One day he asked the man why he did this.  With compassion in his voice, he replied, “A poor elderly woman lives across the street, and I know that her old-age pension is inadequate to buy enough coal.  After the trains go by, she walks along and picks up the pieces she thinks have fallen from the coal car behind the engine.  Her eyesight is failing, and she doesn’t realize that diesels have replaced steam locomotives.  I don’t want to disappoint her, so I just throw some pieces over the fence to help her.”  That is Christianity in action!

Chico and Delamar’s “The Morning Rush” is my favorite radio program in the morning. I usually tune in to them everyday, but since last month I failed to listen to them in the radio due to wedding preparations (I was married to Marj last Ocotber 9 :D ) and office errands. So I just download their podcast and read Chico’s blog. I enjoy the humor, the photos and some empathy in the blog. Easy and fun to read. And these “signs of EGO” is one I very much enjoy. So let me share a few of them, but if you like the whole entry, click on the Strange Fruit

Signs That You Have A Big Ego

  1. Slash – When 2 egocentrics meet, it’s an “I” for an “I”.
  2. West Ice Toshiba – When it comes to my boss, the more I prove him wrong, the louder he shouts at me.
  3. Forg – Your idea of compromise is the other person giving in to you.
  4. Cherry/Suresh – You go on Twitter and expect people to follow you.
  5. No name – If your idea of a “conversation” is you talking, and people listening.
  6. Young Indy – Your version of “I’m sorry” is “I forgive you”.

It is once again “Earth Hour” day in our office. The management has decided to make it a monthly practice since it also saves electric bills. Although not everyone in our agency participate, I think the goal is to lower energy consumption which is also good for mother Earth. Hopefully this will influence many others to conserve energy as much as possible..
